The Last Judgement

Having grown up in a catholic family I know about heaven and hell. But with the faith, the desire for one and fear for the other have disappeared from my life. I still love their images however when they pop up in the long history of the arts, as in the polyptych of the Last Judgement by Rogier van de Weyden.
Seated on a rainbow Christ overlooks how Archangel Michael weighs the souls of the dead who have risen from their graves.

The sinful people tumbling into hell capture the imagination more than the pious going through the gate of heaven.
