Dynamic white

Ryman examined meticulously what he could do with, mainly, white paint on differently coloured surfaces. He himself would not easily give a title like ‘Dynamic white’ to a painting of his. He was very much aware of the materials he used, the kind of paint, the surface, the visible mounting to the wall, etc. For Ryman, his works consist of the materials which they are made of, tout court. That’s why he considered himself a realist and not an abstract painter.
The painting on the photo he named “Check: Oil and Enamelac lacquer on a Lumasite panel, nails”. I like his mentioning of the four nails!
