Both fair ladies have chosen to dress in black – completely or principally -, in stark contrast with their white skins. The one sits free and relaxed on the edge of the pavement. The coffee cup next to her makes it likely that she works in the gallery behind her back and that she has sought out the fresh air for a moment. The other lady walks stiff and resolute over the grey cobble-stones, probably on her way to work. She must have a job that appreciates, yes, even requires a proper, dull appearance.
In spite of their black and white conformity, the difference between the two women is striking. Their exclusive, simultaneous presence on the same stretch of public road gets our fantasy going. The photo could be a still from a carefully directed film scene. In reality it was pure chance, yet so remarkable that, while taking the picture, it made me think aloud: “Ah, I’ve got you there!”
