In Holland, that tiny country by the North Sea where I grew up, a white Christmas is a very rare occurrence. One can dream of it, but the reality is generally one of cold and grey gloominess. Maybe favourable for a state of mind that makes one long for the coming of light in the darkness, but not quite ideal for a merry Christmas.
How different this is in Goa, the small coastal state in the south of India! Christmas, New Year, ….. that’s the season when the weather is at its most pleasant; the ideal time for holidaying and feasting. In daytime one can relax on the beach, and recover from partying through the night under the open sky. No need here to wish people in desperation a Merry Christmas; here merriment is on anyone’s face. Even the decorated crib, with all its characters around it, seems to share in the general atmosphere of cheerfulness.
