Via crucis

or: the missing fingers

Religion can be a true source of inspiration for Art with a capital A – countless examples can be found across the centuries in all the various religions.
It can also provide inspiration for living folklore and the religious kitsch that goes hand in hand with it – of which there are also countless examples.

Now that we are living in the post-religious era – at least as far as I am concerned, and for a small minority of the world’s population – all that remains is the religious Art produced by previous eras. And just like all Art with a capital A, it is still capable of touching us to the very core of our being.

Christianity in India has to manage without this fruitful interplay between art and religion. Christian Art with a capital A is hardly to be found there. For the average believer, for whom religion is of vital importance, this is not a problem at all. Nor is it for me, as a sort of double outsider. The religious folklore and the associated folk culture invariably give me a wonderful time.
