Via crucis
or: the missing fingers
Religion can be a true source of inspiration for Art with a capital A – examples aplenty through the ages for all the different religions.
It can also inspire to living folklore and concomitant religious kitsch – examples aplenty as well.
Living in the post-religious era, at least as far as I am concerned and a small minority of the world population with me, what remains is the religious Art that the preceding eras have produced. And like all Art with a capital A, this is still capable to move us to the core. Having grown up with the tradition of listening at this time of the year to Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, or sometimes his St. John Passion, we know what we are talking about.
Christianity in India has to do without this fertilization of Art by religion. Christian Art with a capital A is very hard to find there. For the average believers, for whom their religion is of vital importance, this is no problem at all. And for me, being a double outsider so to say, it isn’t either. The religious folklore and related popular culture never fail to give me a wonderful time.
