Okains Bay is not just a magnificent bay on New Zealand’s South Island (see last week’s post). It is also the place of an old Maori settlement with still a considerable percentage of Maori population to this date.
The photo shows the inside of the Whaakata, a traditional meeting house, now part of the Maori & Colonial Museum of Okains Bay. Many of the imaginative Maori myths and stories find expression in their intricate wood carvings.
Whether we like it or not, we are nowadays regularly confronted with the phenomenon of elaborate tattoos on body parts of sports and other people trying to attract attention. What a flimsy fashion they parade compared to the art of awe-inspiring Maori tattoos!
