Nowhere have I seen more importance being given to bright red coloured lips than in Iran. Maybe it is to honour Iran’s still immensely popular 14th century poet Hafiz who never got tired of singing his odes in praise of the red colour of wine, roses and his lovers’ lips.
But these are different times under the rule of the Mullahs. So maybe there is yet another reason behind all those painted lips. Since a woman’s face is the only part of her body – apart from her hands – that she is allowed to show in public, she takes pleasure in expressing her femininity through a sensuous red mouth. Maybe not only to attract the eyes of others, but also as a delicate sign of protest.
