“Of what is, that it is; of what is not, that it is not”. A long title for a long work of art, 17.4 meter! In Dodiya’s little photo (see last week’s post) we saw the centre part of the tapestry. In the photo above we see the right end part of it.

Here is how it looks in its entirety, as it was exhibited in New York in 2016.

Goshka Macuga, Tapestry Of what is, …(520×1740 cm, 2012) as exhibited at New Museum, New York 2016

And then to know that this is only half of Macuga’s art work. She has made a sort of diptych, two tapestries of the same size, which however should never be exhibited together at the same place. She made it for dOCUMENTA 13 in 2012. In tapestry-1, shown at the Fridericianum in Kassel, we see people in front of the Queen’s Palace in Kabul, in a composition based on different photos taken at the spot. Its pendant, tapestry-2, was shown at the same time in Kabul at the Queen’s Palace. In that tapestry we see people in front of the Fridericianum in Kassel.

For images – and some more information – of the two tapestries click here.
