An open forest

In 2011, we were building our house on a mountainside in Kumaon, in the Indian Himalayas. I always walked through this open woodland from where I was staying to the building site. I still walk through it regularly and still find it beautiful. It must be down to the gently sloping terrain and the generous spacing between the trees, which allows plenty of light to filter through and spread out. During and after the monsoon, the forest floor is green and you can sometimes see cows and goats grazing there. In the photograph, it is yellow; it was April, before the rains. Four village women are carrying stones on their heads.
